Janet Kain

Software for the Home

Janet Kain, a maker of luxurious pillows, throws, and accessories for the home, has been selling its handmade products to retailers such as Mecox Gardens and home decor stores since 2008. Based in Old Chatham, NY, and with a team of expert sewers in that region, JK prides itself on meticulous attention to detail and superior craftsmanship.

The pillows, stuffed with down and feathers, feature the same high-quality fabric on both sides, rendering an aesthetic defined on JK’s website as “chic and luxurious meets beautiful and happy.” Through a refreshed, updated online experience, JK hopes to raise the visibility of its brand and attract a broader clientele.

Challenge

Janet Kain had a great product. What the company needed was a better way to market it–and its high-end, tony brand. A virtual unknown, JK sought to increase brand awareness, rejuvenate its website so that the sophistication of its pillows and throws would come across to clients online, and allow customers to make purchases on the site. In addition, JK needed an efficient way to manage its inventory.

Approach

Loewy developed a robust Magento ecommerce store aimed at JK’s three target customers—retailers, interior designers, and “urban coastal” consumers. The last demographic, a new one for JK, consists of affluent purchasers and poses a new revenue stream for the pillow-maker. For retailers and interior designers, we built a “trade” subsite where those customers could buy at a discount, order swatches, and print “tear sheets,” among other things. A key feature of the updated JK site is the LookBook, where consumers can view pillows and accessories in a variety of settings before making a purchase. We also worked extensively with the client to craft a back-end system that would accurately and efficiently keep track of the fabric in JK’s inventory.

TECHNOLOGY STACK

This website was built using Magento as its ecommerce system. PHP was used as the server-side scripting language with MySQL as its primary database. jQuery and CSS3 were also used to enhance the front-end user interface and overall usability.

Results

Our website breathed new life into the JK brand and paved the client’s way to market leadership. Built on Magento, the site allows online visitors to browse easily through JK’s products. Using professional photography and expertly crafted settings for the LookBook, we conveyed the vibrancy of JK’s pillows and accessories. We also created a practical, yet elegant, ecommerce site that seamlessly integrates a sophisticated inventory-management system. What’s more, it took us only a few hours to train JK’s staff how to manage the company’s website and inventory.
