Search Made Easy

Institutional Investor Searches, or iiSEARCHES, is a premier web-based service from Institutional Investor that’s used primarily by investment and marketing managers as a source of sales and marketing intelligence and information about institutional plan sponsor activity. Subscribers use the search-engine offering to access new and completed searches, mandate data, and fund sponsor profiles, and to analyze search activity. Run by a well-trained, tightly integrated team of reporters and editors, iiSEARCHES delivers “the most comprehensive coverage of plan sponsor and mandate news in its peer group.”

Challenge

Though a sound, data-rich product, iiSEARCHES needed a makeover. Under the hood, the search tool consisted of a huge database that was running on a cumbersome platform. The search process needed simplification, so that users wouldn’t have to follow so many steps to get from Point A to Point B. What’s more, iiSEARCHES had some impressive features that were being underused because they were buried within a cluttered interface.

Approach

Through a series of client interviews—conversations with marketing managers and client-relations personnel at the likes of ING, Janus, and Prudential—we gathered information and narrowed the scope of work. By getting a sense of how, when, and where subscribers use iiSEARCHES, we were able to assess user needs and business requirements. That allowed us to address the product’s information architecture by mapping out all of our use-case scenarios and information flow. The resulting design reflects users’ most common objectives and tasks. It features four prominent elements: the search tool, related news, customizable email alerts, and analytics, which allow subscribers to create reports that give them visibility into plan sponsor activity, trends and forecasts, competitive intelligence, and more.

TECHNOLOGY STACK

This website was built using HTML, jQuery, and CSS3 to enhance the front-end user interface and overall usability.
