Few companies in the entire world have touched the lives of more people than the Franklin Mint. For more than 45 years, the company has been creating works of fine art and treasured collectibles on a global scale. As with many service-oriented companies, ecommerce has become a huge growth driver for the Franklin Mint, which asked Loewy to enhance its current online offering by providing consumers with a tool they can use to personalize and add sentimental value to their jewelry purchases. The customization tool needed to be designed so that it could accommodate not only jewelry but other products in the Franklin Mint catalog as well, such as die-casts, models, and personalized gifts.

Challenge

The customizer needed to be intuitive and require minimal steps while still being flexible enough to accommodate multiple product types. Each product would have customizable metals, stones, and engraving options, which could result in thousands of combinations. Image previews of each combination had to be able to be generated for users to see what they had created. The site had to be structured and optimized for real-time customization without lag or long loading times.

To optimize graphic performance, we integrated with LiquidPixels, a leading supplier of advanced dynamic imaging solutions. With LiquidPixels’ hosted solution, we were able to deliver real-time product enhancements, customization, and configuration.

Approach

The new jewelry customizer is a simple, intuitive tool that allows consumers to choose their metals, gem types, and the positioning of the stones on a ring, necklace, or bracelet. It also supports custom engraving and a rich, detailed representation of the final piece prior to purchase. The site is structured and optimized for real-time customization with minimal latency.

The tool was built using PHP, Ajax, and JavaScript, with integration points into the Magento Enterprise product database. In addition, we developed APIs for the Franklin Mint’s NetSuite legacy billing system and for its suppliers. Each customized product request is calculated based on the pricing of each variable (gem, metal, engraving, and size), and then sent through APIs to the suppliers for assembly and distribution.

Results

The first phase of the project was to launch a rings catalog. Once it was stabilized, we assisted in the rollout of other jewelry items that could be customized and personalized, such as earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Soon to market is the personalization of die-cast automobile models, seasonal gifts, and home decor products.
