Century 21 Department Stores(C21) is a New York-based retailer that offers top designer merchandise—clothing, cosmetics, accessories, lingerie, luggage, housewares, and more—at discounted prices. The store, which opened in downtown Manhattan in 1961, now has seven locations across New York and New Jersey, including Brooklyn, Long Island, Lincoln Square, and Paramus.

Challenge

C21 wanted to revamp its online presence and came to us for a new look. The retailer needed a site that reflected its international reputation as a destination for in-the-know fashionistas and label-savvy bargain hunters, drove brand engagement, and elevated its presence on search engines. C21 also wanted to be able to easily update and manage its site internally.

Approach

We studied C21’s diverse global clientele as well as major fashion houses, influential designers, top fashion publications, and high-end luxury retailers before developing the department store’s new online brand. We redesigned the site with a chic look and feel that creates a relevant, engaging brand experience for C21’s trend-wise target audiences. We improved search engine visibility by meshing flash animations, JavaScript, and XHTML. Also part of this smart ensemble? A content-management tool that allows the retailera’s web editor to easily maintain the site. To keep trend-spotters in the know, Loewy developed a social media strategy that included Facebook apps and sneak-peak promotions through Twitter.

Results

With a stylish new look online, Century 21’s site traffic increased. Gift-card sales jumped, and the retailer’s social media visibility skyrocketed. Just one month after the site redesign, the number of Facebook friends went up 52% and the store’s Twitter following increased by nearly 80%.
